FARM DESCRIPTION -
The cottage is on a small working organic farm producing avocados, kiwis and
indigenous plants. Historically the valley was grassland with acacia and kiaat
trees dotted about with patches of mist belt forest in ravines and along river
lines.
Today, much of the forests remain but the grasslands are mostly planted with
avocado, macadamia and bluegums. Patches of grassland are being rehabilitated on
our property. There are walking trails on the farm along our stream and into the
forest patches.
Birders should lookout for Black-fronted Bush-Shrike, Narina Trogon,
Yellow-streaked Greenbul, Olive Thrush, Orange Ground-Thrush, Yellow-throated
Woodland-Warbler, Green Twinspot, Mountain Wagtail, Forest Buzzard,
Scaly-throated Honeyguide, White-starred Robin-Chat , Chorister Robin-Chat,
Blue-Mantled Crested flycatcher and Black Saw-wing
WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA -
Adjacent to our farm the Lesodi Trail in the 58 hectare Swartbosch Forest has a
trail and offers excellent birding.
The Woodbush Forest is only a short drive away. This afromontane forest is one
of the most extensive and pristine in the country. It is an excellent site for
birding and identifying trees.
The small village of Haenertsburg offers restaurants, craft shops, grocery
shopping and fuel. Surrounding the village the common protects
200hectares of grassland. The Louis Changuion trail meanders for 10km through
the grassland.

This is one of the most extensive wilderness areas left.
