Gouritzmond has one well-stocked general dealer, also providing fuel, one
liquor store and one restaurant.
The area is very popular for fishing (permits obtainable locally). The beach
offers a good bathing area plus a stretch of rocky beach with lovely pools and a
tide pool for swimming. An easy hiking trail has been laid out around the
lagoon. It is safe to go for long walks.
The town offers a prolific bird population, including a breeding area for the
endangered black African oystereater. Owls are common and kiewiets (plovers) and
guineafowls are common visitors in the garden. (Bird book on bookshelf). Rabbits
graze about in the early morning and tortoises are common - watch out for them
when driving!
Badgers are also common, although not easily spotted. Binoculars will be handy.
Gouritzmond is 45 km away from Mossel Bay, featuring various attractions such as
historical sites, well-equipped shops and restaurants and cage diving with
sharks,. The Diaz Museum, the prehistoric cave at Punt and the Post Office Tree
are on your must-visit list. Mossel Bay is also the beginning of the famous
Garden Route.
George is 100 km from Gouritzmond.
To the other side is Stilbaai, 65 km away, offering lovely beaches and
pre-historic caves.
Albertinia is 35 km away on the N2-route and boasts a hotel well-known for its
superb traditional meals. Bungy-jumping and bridge swinging offered at the
Gouritz River Bridge 30 km away, or visit the game reserve featuring the Big
Five just outside Albertinia.
Whatever you choose to do, you will find the peace and tranquillity of
Gouritzmond a precious experience.
