Oakhurst is one of the original large properties of the Garden Route.
Situated in the Wilderness district, near George. It lies on the undulating
plateau between the indigenous forests of the Outeniqua Mountains and the steep
forest gorges sloping down to the Wilderness "lake district".
The farm covers the area of 640 hectares, 200 hectares of which is forest and
fynbos. Five years ago, Jake and Claire decided to restore the Old House on
Oakhurst in which they live today. The Old house had lain derelict for decades.
Today it had been preserved to its original state. Here they live with their
three daughters. In the bottom of the garden is the beautiful stone building,
built in the 1800's, it was very dated, dilapidated and tired. Two years ago,
Jake decided to restore the Forge and turn it into a very unique, comfortable
and beautiful farm cottage. Built out of rock and huge yellowwood beams, the
cottage sleeps two adults and maximum of three children comfortably. It enjoys a
quiet setting overlooking the most beautiful forests and fields grazed by herds
of jersey dairy cows and Aberdeen Angus beef cattle.
The cottage is surrounded by a mature garden, impressive trees and a sweeping
lawn. The main bedroom has a double bed. The other beds are singles located in
the loft. Carefully selected Percale cotton bedding and huge wrap around bath
towels are provided. A rustic but classic atmosphere has been created with one
of the windows no more than a heavy duty canvas blind creating an 'outdoor
living room.' The unique bathroom has an open shower overlooking the river and
forest. The cottage is serviced daily on request.
Fresh free range eggs and milk from our own dairy and hen house are provided on
request. Your hosts, Jake & Clare live in the Old House, far enough away to
ensure your privacy, but close enough to assist with any requests.
For the nature lover, there are several lovely walks on the farm. All varying in
distances. They all follow ravines and rivers in dense private forest. One walk
to the farm waterfall has been in constant use for over 150 years. New paths are
presently been cleared and layed out on an ongoing basis. For the more
adventurous visitor we are perfectly situated for guests wanting to either
mountain bike or do some trail running. TheFORGE @oakhurst is a great place for
the family, where children can play and parents can relax. The farm animals and
wildlife are also a great hit with guests of all ages, visits to our dairy can
be arranged.
Unit One: Oakhurst Forge
Includes: Self-catering
Double bed. Three single mattresses in loft area. Percale linen. Well equipped
kitchen, lounge and dining room area. Shower and garden area. Can accommodate
two adults and a maximum of three children in the loft area and has double bed.
Unit Two: Westwood cottage
Free standing, two bedrooms, two bathrooms. Open plan kitchen, dining room and
lounge. Big deck looking onto a farm dam.
Only ten minutes to wilderness village and beach. Sleeps four but a sleeper
couch can be arrange for another person in lounge. Bedding and towels provided
