The Ons Kontrei Guest House was the first guesthouse in Uitenhage in 1994. It
was a tiny house in Graaff Reinett Road restored with the utmost care with the
material for the Zink and Wooden structure used from the nearby Concentration
Camp. The owners received the Simon van der Stel Foundation award for the
Restoration of various properties in the Edwardian and Gregorian Style. The
guest house was a two bedroom unit and was opened by the actress Brumilda van
Rensburg and became a popular venue for Honeymoon couples as it was unique with
it's antique furniture and historic feel.
Life goes on and unfortunately life dishes out hard times. After the 3rd
satellite two Bedroom Cottage was opened it was time to reconsider the future.
The logic solution was to concentrate on one area/building and offer more to the
guests as the younger generation did not appreciate "Koperkatels en Bulsakke".
The venue was changed to 40 Caledon Street and the adjacent properties were
bought shortly after the other two satellite guesthouses were closed. The beds
were all replaced by modern style new beds and some of the antique furniture
removed to cater for the new South Africa but the historic homely atmosphere was
never changed.
Today the Ons Kontrei Guest House has expanded to 5 fully equipped self-catering
units each with its own braai facility and 9 double rooms with a cosy dining
room area where breakfast is served. Each room has its own en-suite facility as
well as DStv, a refrigerator and a coffee station. Most rooms also have a
working surface for the travelling businessperson. The guesthouse has its own
secure parking area where cars are parked right next to ones unit. Caledon
Street, where the guesthouse is situated, is the main street of Uitenhage and
therefore there are many food-outlets and shops within walking distance from the
guesthouse. With Port Elizabeth approximately 35 km, Jeffreys Bay 55 km and Addo
National Elephant Part 60 km from Uitenhage, the town is centrally situated
which makes traveling to various attractions in the area trouble-free and
efficient. The Ons Kontrei Guest House is ideal for both the leisure and
corporate guest as both these guest-types needs are catered for.
