These antique stone corbelled houses appear only in the Karoo in an
attractive small area. They were the first houses built by the Voortrekkers in the early 1800s.Due to a shortage of building materials such as wood in the Karoo they built the houses
entirely of stone, even the roof, which was well insulated, being warm in winter
and deliciously cold in summer.
Since most of them had fallen into despair, we decided to restore the one on our
farm Osfontein and make it available as a guesthouse for tourists, so that they
can go back in historical time. Everyone who sleeps here is delighted about the
unique experience and wonder, as they look up in the stone roof, who lived there
and under what circumstances in those days.
Inside one finds the original fireplace with a thick yellow wood beam. This now
serves as a braai/ barbeque place. Fires can also be made outside.
The house has four rooms, the one bedroom has a double bed and the other two
single beds, a bathroom with a washbasin and flushing toilet and a hot shower.
The house is self-catering, with the necessary cutlery, bedding and towels being
provided. There is an electric stove and fridge with freezer. Candles are used
for lighting so as not to spoil the atmosphere of this unique experience.
The Old Stone Shed used to be an old sheep shearing shed and has been converted
into a self-catering unit providing a unique experience when staying in the
Karoo.
Built from stone, the shed has common reed ceilings and is equipped with
electricity.
The house is self-catering with the necessary cutlery, bedding and towels being
provided. The lounge area has a fireplace to add to the atmosphere and provide
extra warmth in the Karoo winters. The bathroom is equipped with a wash basin,
flushing toilet and a shower with hot water. The unit also has an outdoor
shower.
Fires can be made outside and wood can be bought at the farmhouse.
The farmhouse is within walking distance if anything is needed and also has a
swimming pool where guests can cool off.
With all the wide open spaces, guests can go for long walks or mountain biking.
Sitting outside you will see the incredible star filled Karoo sky at night, a
must-see, awe-inspiring sight.
This is the ideal place for the guest who want absolute privacy and do not want
to hear noisy cars or people, just the absolute quietness of a Karoo farm,
surrounded with the veld.
