Dawn and David personally invite you to share their privilege of being the custodians of this unique part of paradise. Combining the graciousness and intimacy of a past era, this secluded retreat built in 1924 perfectly captures the spirit of the Zulu Kingdom, whilst overlooking the eTshaneni Mountain, better known as
Ghost Mountain, where a historic battle took place in 1884.
A short drive from the N2 Highway (outlet
Mkuze) you will travel up the "Donkey Back Mountain Pass" on a good tar road to reach your destination.
Accommodation options include several individual en-suite chalets offering a blend of comfort and charm, and positioned in close proximity to the main complex and swimming pool area. Each chalet has either a breathtaking view of scenic mountains, or beautiful landscaped gardens. Furnishings, fittings and décor are uniquely hand crafted, reflecting the colours and crafts of the local Zulu craftsmen.
Comfortable self-catering accommodation is available in a stone cottage which accommodates six people, and offers a log fireplace. Sit on the deck where tales can be exchanged over refreshments as you watch the sun set on the mountains.
The captivating entertainment complex caters for all seasons, offering indoor and outdoor areas for meals. Maybe it's the invigorating fresh air that stimulates the appetite. David Irons will share his wealth of knowledge of the tsetse fly story in Ubombo. Major Surgeon (later Sir) David Bruce discovered the role of the tsetse fly in the transmission of nagana from infected game to domestic animals in 1894. Visit the site of his historic research. David Irons will share his knowledge of the Zulu Battle which took place in 1884. As a young boy he spoke to elderly men who witnessed the battle, and they passed on to him a true account and knowledge of the battle. Learn about the medicinal plants which grow here. The area of Ubombo, in the Mkuze area, borders on the hypnotic. Part of its attraction can be found in the fabric of the spirit in the land around you. Ubombo overlooks the Zulu battlefield which took place in 1884. Following the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879, Dinuzulu and Zibhebhu, who were rivals for the crown of the deposted King Ceyshwyao, fought the battle of Tshaneni in 1884, leaving the slopes of the Ghost Mountain strewn with the bones of the fallen warriors. The indigenous landscape is so breathtaking that it is usually the lasting impression of all who visit here.
Many come to find rest and respite to soothe the body and mind. Still others seek out Ubombo's many diverse attractions, whilst others enjoy a stop-over en route from Kruger and Swaziland travelling either south or north.
