THE GIANT'S CUP TEA GARDEN AND RESTAURANT
Family Restaurant on the Sani Pass, Himeville, KwaZulu-Natal

The Giant's Cup Café and craft shop is owned and managed by Simone Suchetand is situated 10.5km along the Sani Pass Road in the Southern Drakensberg. It is aptly named after the view of the Giant's Cup peaks, which may be viewed whilst enjoying refreshments in the open mountain air. The building was once the base of Mokhotlong Mountain Transport, which pioneered passenger and freight transport up Sani Pass in the late 50's. There is a fascinating display of photographs from the early days in the restaurant, courtesy of Mary Alexander, and fitting for the laid back atmosphere generated by the location and rural charm. Now with a cosy interior , cypress flooring, and Queen Ann wood stove on in winter, the tea garden is the ideal stopover on one's way up or down the Sani Pass or for a fun family outing. The gardens are indigenous to provide food and shelter for birds and butterflies. The café is a strictly non-smoking establishment.

Whilst parents enjoy the magnificent views, children can stretch their legs outdoors. The 2.5km family Nature Trail offers the opportunity to enjoy more of the mountains and has a useful little booklet explaining points of interest on route. There are benches to rest and gaze at the beauty as well as a small dam for children to play in the shallows. Binoculars are a good idea to bring with you as our property boasts some 97 bird species of which 19 are endemics! A bird list to test your knowledge is available.

Hearty breakfasts (traditional or health buffet) are served daily.Lunches ranging from toasted sandwiches and filled pancakes to trout / cheese platters are on offer, along with our own homemade cakes and other teatime treats .Weekends offer continental cakes such as Black Forest chocolate cake ,German baked cheesecake or Italian apple and cream bake. Simone’s Swiss ancestry is responsible for these scrumptious culinary delights.Milk and cream is sourced from our own Jersey cows and children may watch them being milked at 3.30pm. We make our own butter via a stream powered butter churn in summer, as well as cream cheese, cultured yoghurt and real icecream. We use free range eggs sourced from Pevensey Place, a home for disabled adults.

A wide range of teas, flavoured or plainplunger coffees, milkshakes and soft drinks will quench one's thirst. The water comes direct from the mountains and thus a real treat for the taste buds, allowing you to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee to the full.

The craft shop offers a wide range of handmade crafts from small enterprises that we support and who are based in Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa . These include carvings, keyrings, beadware, tapestries, woollen gloves , scarves, beanies, Karroo soaps, essential oils, hand and lip balms, handmade cards.
