THE ROSE HIP @ THE ROSE HOUSE
Bistro Restaurant
in Fouriesburg, Northern & Eastern Free State,
Free State, South Africa
It's a bit of a secret as far as tourists are concerned but the local
residents and farmers in the area have called it a "treasure". Situated between
Fouriesburg and Clarens on the S 325, The Rose Hip is the small restaurant run
from the beautifully restored Rose House.
Imagine sitting on the wide verandah of the sandstone house looking across a
lovely garden and small vineyard towards the Maluti Mountains while you enjoy a
starter such as a warm rosa tomato and gorgonzola tartlet or a pancetta served
with figs and home made feta. In winter meals are usually served in the dining
room : what about a warming bowl of Tomato and Bacon Soup with baby loaves of
home made bread or Goat's cheese Custard with a salsa of olives, parsley and
spring onions.
Your main course could be a delicious venison pie spiced with chilli and
apricots, an individual fillet portion served with a homemade cherry and port
sauce or a chicken salad on garden greens, with pecan nuts and home made
dressing. In summer all the vegetables and fruit comes from the garden. Puddings
may include a decadent Chocolate Molten pudding, meringues with home made lemon
or orange curd stirred into whipped cream and drizzled with granadilla pulp or a
shortbread tartlet with crème patisserie and a bramble and rosewater coulis.
