WALKERBOUTS INN - RHODES
Family Restaurant
in Rhodes, Wild Coast & Berg,
Eastern Cape, South Africa
Walkerbouts is a spacious homestead with fine country cuisine and hospitality
in the best traditions of the "Platteland".
The restaurant is adjacent to the "Thankshjalot Pub" where a wide range of
liquid refreshments can be enjoyed amidst regular scenes of hilarity and
celebration. Our signature meal is a "build it yourself" pizza that draws people
in from far and wide. A selection of ingredients allows you to add your
favourite toppings, this, as opposed to fast food joints where you are limited
to their combinations! Our home-made pizza bases are prepared with home grown
herbs and rolled thin so that you can enjoy the ingredients and not wade through
a thick wad of "bread". We also specialize in using as much local produce as the
seasons allow. Veggies and herbs from our garden, local lamb, beef and chicken
all add to the great home-cooked meals on our menu.
Walkerbouts Inn is located in the historic village of Rhodes in the Real
Southern 'Drakensberg. The entire village was proclaimed as a National Monument
in 1997 and is surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of high altitude mountain
streams and rivers.
The village is more than 1800m above sea level and the highest nearby peak, Ben
McDhui, soars to 3001m above sea level. Barkly East is 60km away on a narrow and
winding gravel road that must be driven with care. Rhodes, with its turn of the
last century architecture and shady, tree-lined streets has retained its
Victorian charm that is an attraction in itself. The nearby Naudesnek Pass, the
highest in South Africa and many other mountain passes in the area allow one to
"Stitch the Dragon's Tail", a quilting experience of note!
Other attractions in the area include spectacular alpine flowers in summer,
mountain-biking, birding, walks, rock art visits by prior arrangement, 4x4
routes or simply "chilling".
