Potgietersrus) - History & Activities
Just two hours from Gauteng, Mokopane acts as the perfect getaway destination
and the ideal stopover for travellers en route to Botswana, Zimbabwe and the
Kruger National Park.
The town is situated within the unique Waterberg Savannah Biosphere region and
it offers its guests a gorgeous Bushveld experience with a vast array of
entertaining activities.
The town of Pieter Potgietersrus was founded in 1858 and named in memory of
Commandant General Pieter Potgieter who was killed near Makapansgat in 1854. The
name changed to Potgietersrus in 1890 and then again in 2002 to Mokopane. The
town was named after the Ndebele Chief Mokopane, who was also known as Makapan.
The town and immediate surroundings boast the fascinating ancient caves at
Makapansgat Valley, the Big Five, San rock art, the biggest citrus farm in the
southern hemisphere and many more. The area is also rich in minerals, platinum,
diamonds and granite. In the adjacent rural area of Mahwereleng traditional
lifestyles are still maintained. Mokopane also offers a wonderful selection of
outdoor activities ranging from game viewing, hiking, 4x4 trails, to birding and
angling.
