The Retreat is an old Victorian farmhouse set in 560ha of the Groenfontein Valley Conservancy bordering on the 129.000ha Swartberg Nature Reserve, a World Heritage site.

Your hosts, Grant and Marie, enjoy treating guests to true Klein Karoo hospitality. The smell of fresh coffee welcomes you back from a morning walk to a hearty breakfast on the terrace, where dinner - cooked with Marie's continental flair - is also served on most summer evenings. Vegetarians and problem diets are well catered for.

The Retreat has four suites in two garden annexes with stunning mountain views from their private terraces and four comfortable en-suite bedrooms in the main house with French doors opening onto a patio.

The Retreat has a full liquor licence and carries a selection of fine wines of the region, and for those with really discriminating palates, there's also lots of pure mountain wine, the invigorating, crystal-clear water that supplies the house from the leaping streams that cascade down the surrounding mountains.

Take a lazy afternoon stroll in the peaceful lanes of the Groenfontein Valley, stop for a swim on our new rock-pool trail, or enjoy energetic walks and bike rides in the sparkling mountain air.

The Retreat at Groenfontein won the AA Accommodation Awards 2003, 2004 and 2005 and has been in the Hall of Fame from 2006 up to and including 2010
