Tierbos Manor House, Hout Bay
Tierbos Manor House is a Cape Heritage house, built in the early 1920s by the
renowned South African naturalist S H Skaife. It has been in the current owner's
family for over 20 years. Although extensive improvements and renovations have
been made to the house, its original integrity has been retained and preserved.
The house has wonderful proportions and is spacious and elegant.
Situated in a private estate with its own nature reserve, Tierbos Manor House is
set against a mountain, commanding imperial views over Hout Bay Harbour and
surrounds. Walking trails are demarcated within the private nature area and
extensive species of the Cape Floral Kingdom flora abound for nature lovers to
enjoy. An indigenous Knysna forest and several waterfall chains make the estate
all the more magical.
The property is set in a beautiful, indigenous garden with sweeping lawns and a
two level pond with cascading waterfalls. It has a large swimming pool and lapa
area for outdoor entertaining. A self-contained outdoor cottage on the pond
provides further accommodation.
The area is surrounded by mountains and beaches. Literature about walks, hikes,
sightseeing and local attractions can be found in the house library. The Hout
Bay Museum has a large archive on the history of the house and there are many
pieces in the house reflecting old Cape Town including a number of beautiful
model replicas of famous sailing ships.

Hout Bay
Hout Bay is affectionately known as the "Republic of Hout Bay", on account of
the limited access into and out of the suburb. It has a lovely swimming beach, a
picturesque harbour and is well known as a fishing centre, particularly for
crayfish. A visitor to this area should not miss the spectacular drive up and
over Chapman's Peak. Also recommended is a visit to the Hout Bay Craft Market,
the World of Birds, the Hout Bay Museum, a trip from the harbour to Seal Island
in a glass-bottomed boat as well as visits to the ever popular Hout Bay seafood
restaurants (including world renowned fish and chips outlets), the fish market
and various curio and nautical gift shops.
Sporting Activities
Hout Bay and its surroundings offer a wide variety of activities including
swimming, surfing (known as "dungeons" on account of the enormous waves which
attract surfers from all over the world), sea kayaking, game fishing, abseiling,
hiking, cycling and scuba diving. Camps Bay Beach, with the Twelve Apostles
mountain range in the background (and only a 20 minute drive away), is one of
Cape Town's largest, most beautiful and most popular beaches.
Other Attractions
The centre of Cape Town is a 20 minute drive from Hout Bay and here one can take
the cable car up Table Mountain, visit the Victoria and Albert Waterfront to
shop or dine al fresco at one of their superb restaurants, explore the Castle of
Good Hope or visit a variety of museums including the Iziko South African
(Natural History) Museum, the District Six Museum and the Gold of Africa Museum.
A visit to the False Bay (warmer water) beaches of Fishhoek and Muizenberg is
recommended as well as a drive out to Cape Point with a trip up the funicular to
the lighthouse at the top.
Visits to the world renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens (a 10
minute drive from Hout Bay) as well as an outing to the Robben Island World
Heritage Site and Museum should not be missed.
Further afield, one can enjoy a day out in the wine lands, sampling the
excellent Cape Wines in the Stellenbosch, Swellendam, Paarl or Franschoek areas.
