TRADING PLACES
Bed & Breakfast Accommodation
in Smithfield, Free State
You won't miss us in dark plum-pudding of a house with white icing-sugar pillars and old enamel trading store signs collected from all over southern Africa.
Inside, high ceilings and Oregon floors frame comfortable guest suites, with roses, plenty of books and chairs for relaxed reading.
We serve breakfast outside whenever the weather allows, so that you can enjoy our view of the mountain. And if we can tempt you to explore, there's plenty to see and do. Like tennis, bowls, and fishing as well as playing the charming local golf course.
Smithfield's historic cemetery is in close walking distance, and for the energetic there's a hiking trail on the mountain behind the house.
During this walk you will find impressive views in all directions, a cave with San paintings, as well as a rock outcrop with two hamerkop nests and a treasure trove of Boer war graffiti. The trail takes you through a conservancy and you may well see buck and other animals. There's a pair of gymnogenes nesting in the poort through which you drive into the village, and if you are lucky you could see them during your stay, circling over the garden. There is also a flock of flamingoes that often browses in the town dam.
If you have a bit more time, don't miss some other unique local features. There are the remains of two old French mission stations not far from Smithfield - Beersheba and Carmel - both of them worth a visit. And 20 minutes from the village you'll find a local farmer making a truly special product: she milks sheep and is the only manufacturer of traditional sheep-milk cheese in South Africa. We'll arrange a visit to see the milking and cheese-making process if you would like.
Smithfield is convenient for travellers because it's a good place to stop if you are headed for the coast. It's also one of the few villages left with a frontier atmosphere - and yet it offers all the comfort you require, including a massage therapist and a good restaurant!
