UMKOBI SEA COTTAGE
Self Catering Cottage/ House/ Chalet Accommodation
in Southbroom, South Coast,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Umkobi Sea Cottage is a rather unique log home placed on the hillside and
fringes of a protected, lush wetland estuary in Southbroom just south of
Margate.
Set in a secure complex with electric fencing and remote access gates. The
cottage looks out over the reeds of the wetland, lagoon and onto the sands and
surf of the warm Indian Ocean.
There are two bedrooms, both with glass doors leading onto a sea facing deck
which runs the entire length of the unit making the most of the magnificent
scenery. There are two bathrooms, the main bathroom being en suite off the
dressing room.
The cottage has an open plan living space of lounge, dining room and fully
equipped kitchen, with microwave, stove/oven, toaster, kettle, fridge, automatic
washing machine and tumble dryer and all utensils required for about 5 people.
Secure covered parking for your vehicle. The communal pool with wooden deck,
boasts a jetty which allows access to the lagoon.
A "Blue Flag" beach of international standard is within a five-minute drive
or easy walking distance along the beach. The lagoon is ideal for sail boarding.
The Impenjati Nature and Marine Reserve is situated a few kilometers to the
south at the mouth of the Impenjati River and offers joggers or casual strollers
many kilometers of unspoilt pristine beach.
For the golf enthusiast the South Coast and surrounding area is a golfer's
paradise. The Southbroom Golf Club and San Lameer Golf Course are within a few
minutes reach.
The popular holiday resorts of Ramsgate and Margate are about a 10-minute drive
to the north of the chalet. Margate offers all the facilities of a fair sized
town: banks, a cinema, a variety of good restaurants, fast food outlets and
supermarkets. It has curio, gift, stationery and book shops, clothing and hair
boutiques, sports equipment shops, and a superb gym of international standard (SuperBodies).
Granny's pool on Lewin Road nestles amongst rocks and is well positioned for the
sea to keep it clean and scoured of sand all year round. The experience is
delightful, especially at high tide. It feels like you are in the deep of the
sea and yet you have the security of the pool surrounds. The cove to the right,
as you face the sea, offers up numerous shells, including cowries. To the left,
the visibility of a calm sea makes skin diving and snorkelling in and around the
Fascadale Rocks. The Outlook offers spectacular rock formations, cliffs to sea,
and a gentle meander through indigenous vegetation. There are several places to
enjoy the experience, whether you set up on a bench, rock, or simply sit on the
grassland.
The view to sea is uninterrupted and dolphin and whale often come by, close to
shore. For the spectacular sardine run, there is no better view to be had.
The antics of numerous Rock Dassie (Procavia capensis) in the boulders below are
also most entertaining.
When the sardine run gets going each year between June & July, Southbroom is the
place to be. These billions of tiny little fish attract a delightful symphony of
sea life. From the ostentatious dolphins frolicking in the waves to the ensemble
of plunge-diving gannets, this spectacle is a fascinating and unforgettable
experience. Schools of up to 500 dolphins make a spectacular sight and can often
be seen at play during the sardine run. Large sharks and other game joint the
feeding frenzy, which may cause them to leap out of the water or strand
themselves on the beach as they knife through the shoals. The humpback whales
are seen as they migrate along our coast between May and November en-route to
their feeding and breeding grounds off Mozambique and Angola. The whales travel
close to shore on occasion, particularly along the lower South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal
where the continental shelf is close to the land.
In the summer months (October to April), about 45 minutes before sunset,
zillions of swallows get ready for bed. The sight is nothing short of
spectacular even to those who are not regular bird-watchers.
