Snorkelling & Swimming

The are numerous activ ities that youcan indulge in Ponta do Ouro. The most obvious of these is the Main Beach, which is a very good place to visit if you are looking for a place to Snorkel and Swim. The beach is of suchhigh quality that it is one place that you are unlikely to regret visiting.
If you prefer to visit our spectacular Reefs, you can book an Ocean Safari & go out with the boat to Snorkel and admire the wonders of the water. All equipment is included in the Rate.

Surfing/ Kite Surfing

The other obvious thing that you are bound to have funwith are the beautiful waves. Thousands of visitors flock to the beach each year just so as to enjoy some of the waves, which are perfect for Surfing. Whether you are a Pro Surfer or are just learning how to go about it, you are bound to find that the beach has a lot to offer.

Scuba Diving
There are many Dive Operators in Ponta do Ouro. There are Dive Charters & Scuba Training facilities in Ponta do Ouro. The dedicated boatsoffer daily trips for Divers to explore the untouched, world class reefs close offshore, along the Ponta do Ouro coastline. Qualified Instructors, Dive Masters, and Skippers accompany all the trips. Great emphasis is placed on safety, education, conservation awareness, and responsible, non invasive interaction with the marine environment. Success is largely due to the experience and knowledge of the dive sites, and the philosophy of providing affordable divepackages, combined withprofessional service.

The coast off Ponta do Ouro has been declared a Marine Protected Area, and is efficiently managed by the authorities to ensure that the coral reefs and tropical aquatic life is preserved in its original pristine state.

Swimming with the Dolphins

Ponta do Ouro's two Dolphin Centers was founded for the purposeof educational and ethical wild dolphin in-water Encountours that would fund the long term monitoring of the local Dolphins of Ponta. Their love & dedication to the dolphins and citizen science saw the birth of what was to be Africa's first structured wild dolphin swimprogram. All equipment is included in the Rate.

Deep Sea Fishing

These Service Providers commit to provide a fishing experience of a lifetime .Your safety and experience is their biggest concern... They provide an experienced deckhand to assist you in all aspects of fishing. They will clean, wrap and freeze your catch, free of charge. They provide all your equipment on the fishing charter including bait and lures. Their fishing Charters are designed with our customers and their pleasurable experience in mind.

If you are not a fan of water sports, there are other things that you can indulge in as well. For instance Quad Biking

This Service Provider offer the largest fleet of quad bikes in Ponta Do Ouro. Their newly upgraded fleet of KAWASAKI KFX 700cc bikes will thrill your socks off. They have helmets for those who require and all their bikes are serviced regularly. Their bikes are fully automatic, so even if you have never driven on a quadbike this willbe the easiest thing in the world. No Children under 16 are allowed to drive on Mozambican roads. however if accompanied by an adult this is not a problem. They offer bike rentals and tours. - Fish shop - if it is bait and frozen fish you are after head to the right of the filling station where you find fridges full of frozen fish.

- Ethnic Threads - has a range of material and accessories for those looking for something unique. They also have sewing services if you need something made up for a wedding or function etc

- Lukas Butchery has a wide variety of meats for your every need including spices, pastas, rice and camping gear and a range of sweets...

- Pharmacy - The pharmacy is in the mall at the end of the passage where you can find many of the drugs you might need while in Ponta or in case of any Medical Emergency

- Bread can be obtained form various places in the market but is mainly supplied by Elias's bakery found next to Fernando's

- Vodacom - purchase a sim card at one of the barrakas where you see the Vodacom signs and save yourself some money especially if you have friends and family here on holiday with you. You can also use these sim cards to load your phone with Internet Data.

- Local Market - Fresh Produce and assortment of essentials

Travel Tips

Items are permitted to be taken across the border, howeverthe following limits apply

  • Beer will be taxed at the Border
  • Alcoholic Drinks: 1 litre of Spirits & 2.25 litres of Wine
  • Perfumes: 50ml Bottle of Perfume
  • Pharmaceutical Products: Quantity considered reasonable for personal consumpiton
  • Other Goods (Groceries, etc): Up to a value of R2 000.00 or R3 000.00


The Border Authorities are aware of the price of Liquor and you will not be able to negotiate the Border Taxes
PLEASE DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL AT THE BORDER AS YOU MAY BE DENIED ENTRY

Cell Phone - Connectivity

We Suggest that you arrange with your Service Provider in your country beforehand to activate your International Roaming.

You can also buy a Local Sim Card & Airtime at the Local Market. This is very cheap and you can also convert this airtime to Data

Currency

Currency Cheques and Travellers' Cheques are not accepted anywhere in Ponta. Most places have Credit Card facilities and there is an ATM Machine in Ponta where you can withdraw Meticais. Metical is the local currency but South African Rands and US Dollars are accepted by all in the area. The Mozambique currency rate fluctuates, so please ensure that you are aware of this. Please note that if you pay via your Credit/ Debit Card your bank will convert the amount to Meticais at the Bank Rate and again to ZAR as the Buying and selling Rates apply.

Fuel & Diesel

Normal fuel & Diesel is available at Ponta do Ouro. However unleaded fuel is not available there. It is advisable to fill upin Manguzi (SA) as sometimes Fuel & Diesel is not always available, eg Power-cuts

Malaria

Ponta do Ouro is very, very low risk area but you are welcome to bring some Peaceful Sleep with. All our Rooms are equipped with Mosquito Nets.

Border Transfers from Kosi Bay Border Post ONLYl!

    • You will needa 4x4 or 2x4 with Difflock to drive from the Border to Paraiso do Curo
    • If you do not have a 4x4 to get across the border, you can park your car at a secure parking area on the South African side of the border, where there is 24 hr security, for +- R40.00 per vehicle per day.
    • You can drive your car to the Border post, unload your bags and drive your car to the Car Park.
    • Paraiso do Curo offers Border Transfers@ R250 per person Return. This needs to be booked in advance

  • Border Control

    Note: Ensure that your Passport is stamped on both sides of the Border NB NB!!!
    • Please note that only 4 x 4 vehicles willbe able to drive the route to the Resort, as there are no tarred roads, only loose sea sand.
    • The Ponta do Curo border (Kosl Bay) is open from 8am - 5pm.
    • On arrival, first clear SA immigraiton, {brick building on left) and then cross over to the Mozambican side and clear im immigration
    • If you intend taking a vehicle over the border, you need to purchase a Temporary Importation Permit, (corrugated iron b building on the left - obtain necessary forms before queuing.)
    • Please ensure you take your Vehicle Registration Papers with you and if you vehicle is stillon HP you will need to obtain a letter from the bank giving you permission to take it over the border.
    • You willbe required to pay 3rd Party Insurance of +- R 280.00 for your vehicle at the Mozambique border.
    • You will also require a Temporary Import License should you be towing a Trailer or Boat. This will cost youin the region of R80.00.

    - Remember to let your tyres down to 0.9 Bar (all 4 wheels) to avoid getting stuck in the Sand.

    Visas
    • South African Passport holders do not require a visa.
    • All other passport holdersdo require visas which are available either from the Mozambique Embassy or at the border.
    • VISAS: can be obtained through your local Mozambican Embassy, but arenot necessary for SA Citizens.
    • The New Immigration Regulation dictates that as from 01 July 2015 children require UNABRIDGED BIRTHCERTIFICATES. along with their passports, when travelling outside of South Africa.

    Should you be travelling with/makinga reservation for children, please ensure that youapply for these certificates timeously.

    • Take Offramp to Hendrina.
    • From Hendrina, drive to Ermelo. 50km

    -Once in Ermelo turn left at the Big Engen Garage/ Wimpy. (It is on the left hand side of the robot)

    • From Ermelo drive to Piet Relief on N2 - 100km.
    • From Piel Relief drive to Pongolo on N2 - 100km.
    • From Pongola drive 51km to the Jozini turn-off.
    • Enjoy your drive through the mountain pass!!!
    • Before you enter Jozin•i there is a speed bump
    • In Jozini the road will fork. Take the left turn to go over the dam wall.
    • Drive 38km to T Junction. Turn Right towards KwaNqwanase. (Watch out for Potholes on this road!!!)
    • Travel Straight, go over traffic Circle towards KwaNgwanase.

    -Pass through Manguzi Town.

    • Drive 16km to the Kosi Bay Border Post.
    • Total distancefrom JHB = 670km

    Note: be aware of animals and speed bumps, mainly from Jozini to the Kosi Bay Border Post!!! Watch for Speed Bump warning signs!!!

    Durban Route #1

    Durban Route # 2

    • Durban - Empangeni - Hluluwe
    • Continue on Hluluwe road passing the Sodwana turnoff until you get a circle in the road.
    • Follow around circle to the right and continue on this road to Kosi Bay / Manguzi (KwaNgwanase).

    Komatipoort Border Post - Not Recommended

    • If you want to enter through the Komatipoort Border Post - Maputo, you will have to travel 1 hour from the border gate to the ferry (Catembe).
    • Then you have to wait for the ferry (30mln per trip - sometimes you can wait up to 3 hours).

    -Once across the ferry (Catembe), you will have to travel to Ponta do Ouro, which is 120km away and the road is not so good.

    • You are looking at another 3 hours drive, as you cannot travel faster than 25km/h.

    - If it rains, you will get stuck.

    • We do not arrange Travel Transfers from Maputo or Airport Transfers!!!

  • Continue on Hluluwe road passing the Sodwana turnoff until you get a circle in the road.
  • Follow around circle to the right and continue on this road to Kosi Bay / Manguzi (KwaNgwanase).

Komatipoort Border Post - Not Recommended

  • If you want to enter through the Komatipoort Border Post - Maputo, you will have to travel 1 hour from the border gate to the ferry (Catembe).
  • Then you have to wait for the ferry (30mln per trip - sometimes you can wait up to 3 hours).

-Once across the ferry (Catembe), you will have to travel to Ponta do Ouro, which is 120km away and the road is not so good.

  • You are looking at another 3 hours drive, as you cannot travel faster than 25km/h.

- If it rains, you will get stuck.

  • We do not arrange Travel Transfers from Maputo or Airport Transfers!!!
