Camdeboo National Park

Formerly known as the Karoo Nature Reserve, the Camdeboo National Park is located in the foothills of the Sneeuberg range and completely surrounds the town of Graaf Reinet.

One of the more interesting geological features of the park is the Valley of Desolation that cuts a deep canyon through the Sneeuberg. Spandau Kop is another prominent landmark found in the park. It's perfectly circular dolerite crown is a defining characteristic of the many koppies found throughout the Karoo.

The Camdeboo Conservation Centre, located at the base of the Spandau Kop, provides environmental courses to help students better understand the importance of the flora and fauna of the region.

The Van Ryneveld's Pass Dam, located to the north of Graaf Reinet on the Sunday's River is a very popular fishing spot with the locals.

The Camdeboo National Park has been well-stocked with a number of large game that have been re-introduced to the area, including Cape mountain zebra, Cape buffalo, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, kudu and and many other smaller antelope.

Hikers may roam freely throughout the park as there is no need for set trails in the sparse vegetation. Temperatures can be very hot during the summer, so hikers are well-advised to head out early to beat the scorching noon-day sun.
