De Oude Drostdy Museum - Tulbagh

The De Oude Drostdy Museum is a historic site located near Tulbagh in the Breede Valley, Western Cape. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored Cape Dutch building, originally built in 1806 by Louis Michael Thibault to serve as the Drostdy, or magistrate’s court, for the Tulbagh district. The building is an excellent example of 19th-century Cape Dutch architecture, featuring thick whitewashed walls, thatched roofs, and gables adorned with intricate details.

The museum offers a glimpse into the early judicial and administrative practices of the time. Visitors can explore the courtroom, the prison cells, and the living quarters of the magistrate, all furnished with period pieces to recreate the atmosphere of the early 1800s. The museum also displays a collection of Cape antique furniture, silverware, and other artifacts that reflect the lifestyle of the region's early European settlers.

One of the highlights of visiting De Oude Drostdy is the opportunity to taste wines from the Drostdy Hof wine estate, which is located on the same grounds. The estate produces a range of wines that can be sampled in the historic surroundings of the museum, adding a unique cultural experience to the visit.
