One of the Eastern Cape's lesser known reserves, the Hluleka Nature Reserve
lies on a tranquil stretch of the Wild Coast, roughly 30 km from Port St. Johns,
and approximately ninety kilometers south east of Umtata. The reserve is
comprised of the 722ha Strachan's Grant Farm, a stretch of coastline, and the
magnificent forest reserves of Congwane Mtombo and Ndabeni Hluleka.
A number of diverse ecosystems exist within the Hluleka Nature Reserve, and
these include rocky coastline, lagoons, grassy hilltops, and impressive forests,
home to Natal Fig, Quinine, Stink Ebony and Coral trees. Hluleka offers its
visitors a number of recreational activities, which include direct access to
pristine beaches which allow for excellent whale and dolphin watching
opportunities, well maintained walking trails, picnic spots, and birding for
which Hluleka is renowned.
Avid bird watchers are treated with the chance of sighting such species as the
elusive Cape Parrot, Osprey, Ground Hornbill, the rare green Coucal, African
Finfoot and Knysna Loerie. Hiking through Hluleka Nature Reserve will also allow
visitors to view a wide variety of wildlife which also exists within the
reserve, and includes Bushbuck, Red Hartebeest, Bush Pig, Burchell's Zebra, Cape
Clawless Otter, blesbok, Eland, Rock Hyrax also known as Rock Dassies, Blue
Wildebeest, Impala and Blue Duiker.
