An interesting history...

During South Africa's apartheid era, a period defined by division and unrest, Bunny Park in Rynfield, Benoni, stood as a paradoxical space. On the surface, it offered a haven of innocence and joy - a place where children could marvel at fluffy bunnies hopping freely and families could gather for picnics beneath the African sky. However, this picturesque setting existed within the context of the nation's broader social and political turmoil.

Bunny Park was more than just a place for leisure; it mirrored the broader societal dynamics of its time. Like many public spaces during the apartheid era, it functioned under policies that enforced racial segregation and upheld inequality. Yet, within its boundaries, the charm of the animals and the pleasure of outdoor recreation sought to offer a temporary escape from the turbulent reality beyond its gates.

Under apartheid, segregation pervaded all public spaces, including parks and recreational sites. Although Bunny Park offered an escape and a space for family outings, it is important to acknowledge that not everyone had equal access to such simple joys. Despite its serene ambiance, the park was likely influenced by the same discriminatory laws that governed every facet of life during that era.
