Constantia Nek Pass - Cape Town
Constantia Nek Pass, often referred to as Constantia Mountain Pass, is one of the oldest and most scenic mountain passes in Cape Town, South Africa. It connects the lush Constantia Valley to the picturesque Hout Bay, traversing the slopes of the Table Mountain National Park. The pass holds historical significance and is a popular route for locals and tourists alike, offering breathtaking views and access to a variety of outdoor activities. The highest point of the Constantia Nek Pass is 212m. The pass offers many hiking routes from the top and is very popular amongst visitors and locals.
Historical Significance: Constantia Nek is one of the oldest passes in South Africa, dating back to the late 17th century. It was originally used as a route by early settlers and farmers traveling between the Constantia Valley and the fishing village of Hout Bay. The pass has remained an important link in Cape Town’s road network, preserving its historical charm while being modernized for contemporary use.
Scenic Beauty: The pass offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including the rolling vineyards of the Constantia Valley, the rugged cliffs of the Table Mountain range, and the expansive Atlantic Ocean as you descend towards Hout Bay. The route is lined with ancient oak trees and native fynbos, providing a picturesque and serene driving experience. Several viewpoints along the way offer opportunities to stop and take in the panoramic vistas.
Outdoor Activities: Constantia Nek Pass is a gateway to some of Cape Town's most popular outdoor attractions. The Constantia Greenbelt, a network of walking and horse-riding trails, can be accessed from the pass, offering beautiful routes through the forests and vineyards of the Constantia Valley. Additionally, the pass is the starting point for hikes up to the summit of Table Mountain via the Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine trails. These trails are well-loved for their natural beauty and the challenge they present to hikers.
The pass is also in close proximity to the renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, one of the most famous botanical gardens in the world. The gardens are a haven for plant lovers and offer easy access to several hiking routes, including the popular route up to the Table Mountain summit.
