Malagas Pont Ferry - Whale Coast, Western Cape

The Malagas Pont Ferry is a unique and historically significant ferry service located on the Breede River near Malgas on the Whale Coast in the Western Cape. The pont was a service which was started in 1860 and is still in operation today as the last working example in South Africa, and it serves as a vital transport link, allowing vehicles and passengers to cross the Breede River. The ferry is operated manually by a team that uses ropes and pulleys to guide it across the river, providing a rare and nostalgic experience for visitors.

Dating back to the 19th century, the ferry played a crucial role in connecting the farming communities and facilitating the transport of goods between the two banks of the river. While modern infrastructure has reduced the need for such ferries in many parts of the country, the Malagas Pont Ferry continues to function both as a working ferry and a tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its charm and historical value. The pont runs from sunrise to sunset and hauls vehicles, pedestrian and livestock across the river.

Before traveling from Cape Town was made easier by road, Malagas was an inland port for steamboats transporting provisions to the Swellendam area. Malagas was the name of a Hottentot chief, whose kraal was situated near the site of the Malagas village . The name of the village was changed to Malgas because in the early days of the Postal services, post for the village ended up in Malaga Spain! But today the village is not known for the steamboats, the Hottentot Chief, or even the port but rather from the man drawn pontoon across the Breede River.

Travelers can use the ferry while exploring the beautiful Whale Coast and surrounding Overberg region, making it a memorable part of any journey. The crossing itself offers scenic views of the Breede River and surrounding countryside, providing a step back in time to a simpler mode of transport and offering a taste of South Africa’s rural heritage.
