The Clocolan Vintage Tractor Fair is held in the town of Clocolan (now Hlohlolwane) a town established in 1907, which is situated in the heart of the Eastern Free State on the R26 halfway between Bethlehem and Bloemfontein. The town is known to be the second smallest district in South Africa, but it is also one of the top agricultural districts in the country and this is home to the annual Clocolan Vintage Tractor Fair. Once a year since 1989 a Vintage Tractor and Engine Fair has been held here. The fair draws Tractors from as far afield as Natal and it has grown from only 29 tractors in 1989 to over 153 in recent years.
The parade which passes through the streets of Hlohlolwane (Clocolan) creates a perfect carnival atmosphere. One of the highlights of the fair is the firing up of a 1902 threshing machine which is put through its paces during a working demonstration, and this makes for an unforgettable experience. The National Ploughing Championships are held in Hlohlolwane (Clocolan) during the fair and watching these vintage machines race each other to the finish line amidst the cheers and laughs of the crowd is reason itself to visit. There are stalls, horse riding, gymkhana, bars and pubs, and on Saturday night the Showground Hall is alive with bands and much fun is to be had by one and all.
