The Goetz-Fleischack Museum in Potchefstroom gets its name from two of the towns historical figures. The Landdros (Magistrate) Andreas Marthinus Goetz who was the magistrate of Potchefstroom from 1870-1881 which also included the years during the First War of Independance (1880 -1881) and A.R. Fleischack, the founder of one of the oldest existing firms of attorneys in Potchefstroom and also the son in law of Goetz, both of these men resided in the building which became the museum in 1985. The building was one of the first townhouses to be built around the Nieuwe Marktplein (New Market Square) between1850 and 1855 and was declared a national monument in 1984 more that 120 years later. The house was built in the Karoo style with yellow-wood shutters, ceilings and inner doors, and both the kitchen and pantry have peachstone floors. The house has been restored and is furnished in Victorian style. Part of the walled in section of the building includes a stable and coach shed.
Visitors can explore exhibits that include period furniture, household items, and historical artifacts related to the everyday life of its former inhabitants. The museum also highlights the role of Goetz Fleischack, who played an important part in the community’s civic and legal affairs during his time.
