Beesloop is regarded as one of the big annual events taking place in the Western Cape countryside. The Beesloop (cattle walk) is a mixture of events including a road race, fun walk, fun fair, tractor rides, Kindergarten Cook competition, and Story Ship.
The farm Oudewagendrift in the Overhex valley just outside Worcester is the starting point for the 15 kilometre Beesloop Farm Race and 5 kilometre Fun Run which is run on farm roads between vineyards and orchards, past cows and old farmsteads, dams and through fields, making it a unique event on the ASA calendar. For the fit there is a 15 kilometre route and the alternative 5 kilometre fun run gives families the chance to participate.
After the race, competitors, families and spectators are encouraged to head over to the Worcester Oos primary school in Sutherland street, Worcester. The school is hard to recognise for locals as it is transformed each year for the fair with tents, flags, stalls and games all over the place. The fair which starts at 09:30 includes events such as the SASKO Kindergarten Cook competition for children (ages 5 to 8 years) which takes place in the school hall and the Story Ship show will commence after the cooking competition. During the show parents and adults are invited to amuse themselves by strolling through the stalls, having tea and cake in the teagarden, buying fruit and vegetables from the farm stalls, or sipping a glass of bubbly in the wine garden. There are also pancakes, puddings, hamburgers and hotdogs on sale.
One of the moo-st unique events of the Beesloop is the competition where the winners are randomly chosen by the days superstar. Tickets for the competition are on sale throughout the day and each ticket correlates to a block of ground on the rugby field. As the saying goes, the Beesloop aint over till the fat lady sings. In this case, her name is Blommetjie and she is a large black and white cow. Blommetjie is led out onto the field where she walks around, sniffing the grass and finally choosing a place to lift her tail and poop, thus making her mark on the pre divided field and selecting the winner.
