Located 33 kilometres to the north of Fauresmith and southeast of Koffiefontein, you will find this pretty little nature reserve in the Free State. Because of the remote location of this 4500-hectare reserve, this truly is a hidden gem!
The dam is a popular fishing spot and you will find anglers trying to catch yellowfish – both the small and large mouth varieties that are a rare find in most fishing dams and are a major reason anglers head here. The land that surrounds the dam is too small to support much wildlife, but you will find about 170 species of birds, which makes this a bird watcher’s paradise! The dam attracts a good number of terns, greater and lesser flamingos and the South African shelduck. The rufous-eared warbler, Orange River white-eye and the tiny African quail finch are other attractive birds that can be seen in the area.
Braais, slipways and toilets are there for the convenience of anglers and picnickers. There are no shops near the reserve and visitors must bring their own provisions and equipment.
