The Peter Mokaba Stadium, located in Polokwane, Limpopo, is a prominent multi-purpose stadium named after the anti-apartheid activist Peter Mokaba, who was known for his leadership within the African National Congress (ANC). The stadium was constructed ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as part of South Africa’s effort to build and modernize sports infrastructure for the global event. Officially opened in 2010, it served as one of the host venues for the World Cup, hosting four group stage matches during the tournament.
The design of the Peter Mokaba Stadium is inspired by the baobab tree, a symbol of African strength and endurance. The architectural structure features four towering corner supports resembling the baobab’s roots, making it one of the most visually distinct stadiums in South Africa. With a seating capacity of around 45,000, the stadium is used primarily for soccer matches but is also equipped to host rugby and other large-scale events. It has become a key facility for local and international sports competitions, as well as concerts and community events in Polokwane.
The stadium plays an important role in the development of sports in Limpopo, serving as the home ground for local soccer teams such as Polokwane City FC and Baroka FC. It is also a popular venue for hosting national matches, training camps, and youth sports development programs, contributing to the growth of sports culture in the region.
