Newlands Cricket Ground, located in the leafy suburb of Newlands in Cape Town, is one of the most iconic cricket venues in the world. Established in 1888, it is the second-oldest cricket ground in South Africa, following St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. The history of Newlands Cricket Ground began when cricket in the Cape Colony was still in its infancy. The Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) was instrumental in the establishment of the ground. The first recorded match at Newlands took place on January 2, 1888, when the Western Province took on a touring team from England. Since then, the ground has been the site of many historic matches, including domestic competitions and international test matches. It hosted its first Test match in 1889 when England played against South Africa, marking the beginning of its long association with top-level cricket.
Over the years, Newlands has undergone several renovations to modernize its facilities while preserving its historic charm. The ground has witnessed numerous memorable cricketing moments, including thrilling test matches, one-day internationals, and T20 games. It is the home ground of the Cape Cobras in South Africa’s domestic competitions and regularly hosts matches involving the South African national cricket team, the Proteas.
