Ais-Ais

Ais Ais (pronounced eye-ice) literally translates to burning water from the ancient local Nama language, and this refers to the sulphurous hot springs found in the area. Ais Ais is a simmering oasis at the southern end of the Fish River Conservation area where travellers and hikers can kick off their shoes and soak in the smouldering mineral-rich water after trudging through the Fish River Canyon in Namibia.

When you are on holiday in Namibia, you will find the Ais Ais hot springs in the southern region of the Fish River Nature Conservation area, at the end of the Fish River Hiking Trail. The entrance is near the Grunau turn off on to the C10, best accessed via the B1. Ai-Ais is at the end of this 73 kilometer untarred road. With temperatures reaching up to 60 centigrade, these sulphate and fluoride-rich cauldrons originate from deep within the earth providing exceptional healing qualities which are particularly good for rheumatism and nerve disorders. These soothing springs are surrounded by 360 degree views of stunning Namibia landscape scenery teeming with wildlife and a variety of bird species.

Landscape in the area is dusty, desolate and dotted with rocky hills and mountains, which are wonderful to explore on horseback. You can cross the rugged terrain on 4x4 adventures in the Fish River Canyon, hike on scenic trails.

The best time to visit Ais Ais in Namibia is between the months of May and August, which also marks the start of the Fish River Canyon hiking season. Ais Ais resorts are closed during the summer months between November and February as this barren area simply gets too hot, with temperatures often soaring over 45 Celcius.
