eKulindeni, formerly Eerstehoek, is situated on the Southern border of the Songimvelo Nature Reserve from which it derives most of its economic benefits. Songimvelo covers an area of 50,000 hectares and is the largest provincial game reserve in South Africa. The reserve is accessable only by horse from eKulindeni and consists of mountains, valleys and flood plains. It is an incredibly tough terrain that can only be accessed by horseback and horses can be organized in eKulindeni. Only 5% of Songimvelo has 4x4 road. Game viewing is plentiful but limited to herbivores from the smallest up to and including elephant. There is no danger of running into lion while on a horse trail.
