Sherwood is known as 'the garden suburb', because of its magnificent nurseries and manicured properties, and is Durban's western-most suburb before entering Westville and the Highway area of 'greater Durban', yet it's only 6km from the Durban City Hall. Sherwood is renowned for caring for people as well as flora. A hospice, home for the blind, work facility for the mentally challenged, special high school and Habitats for Humanity development initiated by former US President Jimmy Carter are all situated in Sherwood. Sherwood is named after the Sherwood Foresters, the nickname of the British 45th Regiment of Foot stationed in Sherwood in the mid-19th Century, who constructed a cutting through a hill now known as 45th Cutting. This is the last cut-off point in the 'down run' of the world-famous Comrades Marathon between KwaZulu Natal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg and Durban. In Sherwood you'll find comfortable private Sherwood Self Catering accommodation in a quiet and secure residential area, but be warned, if you want to stay in Sherwood during the Comrades Marathon - book early!
