Umtata (now officially known as Mthatha) in the Eastern Cape, Wild Coast, is renowned as "Madiba Country", in honour of Nelson Mandela who was born in Mvezo, into the Madiba clan of the Thembu royal family, and spent his childhood in the nearby Umtata town of Qunu
The Mthatha / Umtata main attraction is one of three Nelson Mandela Museums, which document the life and times of Mandela, and displays a substantial variety of historic documents and photos of Madiba's "Long Walk to Freedom".
Umtata / Mthatha is also the heart of the Eastern Cape Nelson Mandela Route - established for visitors who want to follow in the footsteps of a living legend, and explore Nelson Mandela history. If you're planing to follow the Eastern Cape Nelson Mandela Route, it begins in King William's Town in the Eastern Cape, where you'll find luxurious King William's Town Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Leaving King William’s Town, the Nelson Mandela Route travels through Eastern Cape's Bisho, following a scenic route along the N2 national road to Umtata / Mthatha, the next stop in this historic journey.
Although you may not find many Mthatha / Umtata Self Catering accommodation establishments, Umtata Bed & Breakfast accommodation offers comfort in the heart of the Eastern Cape. Some of the better Mthatha Hotels and Umtata Bed and Breakfast accommodation can be found on the outskirts of town.
The Eastern Cape town of Umtata / Mthatha was originally the capital of the Eastern Cape, Transkei, homeland of the Xhosa during the Apartheid era. The former Transkei is now part of the Eastern Cape province, and Umtata / Mthatha remains the bustling centre of the region. This part of the Eastern Cape still retains its old traditions, with women carrying jars of water on their heads, wearing turbans, ochre-coloured dresses and wire bracelets, with white clay adorning their faces and bodies.
Typical Eastern Cape activities in the area include the Madiba hiking trail which leads hikers to Qunu where Nelson Mandela grew up, and the University of Fort Hare. The Eastern Cape Umtata Dam has some lovely picnic spots, and offers a range of water sports. There are also a number of nature reserves in the area, where you can fish, bird watch, and enjoy the evergreen forests and unspoilt countryside surrounding Umtata / Mthatha.
Umtata / Mthatha has road and rail connections with East London 211km to the south, where you will find some of the best beaches along the Eastern Cape coastline, and an abundance of East London accommodation offering good old-fashioned hospitality.
Another coastal town closer to Umtata is Coffee Bay, 64km from Umtata and 200km along the N2 north of East London. Coffee Bay is known for its rustic "beachcomber-style", where you can get away from it all in Coffee Bay accommodation right on the beach.
