Built in 1911 by the renowned British architect, Edwin Lutyens, the Johannesburg Art Gallery has grown over the years to become the largest collection of artwork in South Africa. So large is the collection that Rochelle Keene, the chief curator of the gallery, is only able to display about 10% of the gallery's collection at any one time.

The Johannesburg Art Gallery was designed by Edward Lutyens. It contains an impressive collection of 17th century Dutch paintings, 18th and 19th century British and European art, as well as many 19th century South African works. The gallery also has a large collection of 20th century contemporary local and international art including important works by Picasso, Pissarro, Monet, and Degas to name just a few.

The gallery's South African collection has procured a number of pieces from many renowned South African artists including Maud Sumner, Gerard Sekoto, Alexis Preller, Sydney Kumalo, and Ezrom Legae.

Contemporary South African artists are also represented with works made a wide variety of media including wire, rock, wood, tyre, cement, bronze, clay, ceramic and metal.
