OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary - Potchefstroom, North West

Just south of Potchefstroom you find the OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary an approximately 70 hectare reserve along the banks of the Mooi River. The reserve is dedicated to the preservation of wild life and more specifically bird life and the more than 200 different species of birds attracts bird lovers both locally and internationally. Dr OPM Prozesky of the Transvaal Museum championed the cause of the reserve during the early 1980s and it was decided that the disused sewage ponds of the local municipality which attracted prolific birdlife and nature lovers would be the ideal location. The reserve is a joint venture between the land owners, the Potchefstroom City Council and BirdLife Wesvaal.

BirdLife Wesvaal and the Potchefstroom City Council believe that as part of South Africas green heritage it is essential for us to preserve and protect the environment for future generations. The OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary belongs to the community of Potchefstroom therefore it should be utilized with the utmost respect for the environment. The layout of the pathways in the reserve have has been designed specifically for bird viewing with bridges ensuring that all areas of the reserve are accessible on foot and that all the hides give the best views of the birdlife in the reserve. The pathways in the reserve are maintained by the Potchefstroom City Council. The area that the reserve falls into is classified as a wetland which means that there are large, number of water birds as well as waders. Some of the birds that visitors are most likely to see include African Purple Swamphen, Black Crake, Black-winged Stilt and various species of duck. There are also large numbers of herons and there is even a resident pair of Goliath Heron in the reserve. You will also find warblers, weavers, waxbills, cisticolas, pipits and chats.

On the first Saturday of every month, BirdLife Wesvaal has special open days where newcomers to birding are guided through the reserve by experience birders and environmental awareness is taught. The environmental awareness program is also taught at the request of local schools and at special occasions like National Bird Week and Birding Big Day. There are also two hikes in the reserve - the Squacco Heron Route (4 km) and the Grey Heron Route (9 km).

The reserve fenced but is open during daylight hours and entrance can be gained to the reserve through the main gate . There is no entrance fee or access permit required.
