The Irma Stern Museum and Art Gallery in Rosebank, Cape Town, is a tribute to one of South Africa’s most renowned artists, Irma Stern. The museum is housed in her former home, which she purchased in 1927 named "The Firs" on Cecil Road in Rosebank and in which she lived in for over four decades. The house has been preserved as it was during Stern's lifetime, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into the world of this celebrated Expressionist painter. The Irma Stern Museum, now administered by the University of Cape Town.
The museum showcases a large collection of Irma Stern’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures, reflecting her deep love for travel, culture, and vibrant color. Her works are heavily influenced by her journeys through Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, and feature a variety of subjects, including portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. In addition to her art, the museum displays her personal collection of African art, furniture, and artifacts from her travels, creating an immersive cultural experience.
The subject matter of her paintings varies from portraits and figures to still lifes and landscapes. Her choice of media was also varied, including charcoal, gouache, oils, and water colours. Exhibitions by Irma Stern were well-received in Europe as early as the 1920's, but it was not until decades later that her work was fully appreciated by conservative critics in South African.
She travelled extensively throughout her life, and especially enjoyed the Congo and the Zanzibar, which gave inspiration to much of her work. While travelling, she collected many artefacts which are still on display in the preserved decor of her home. Later in life she became interested more in ceramics, creating beautiful vases, jugs, and plates adourned with curious faces.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary South African artists, making it a dynamic space for art lovers. Stern’s lush garden, which she designed and tended herself, is an additional highlight, providing a peaceful escape in the heart of Cape Town.
