The Hex River Valley, located in the Western Cape, is one of South Africa's most picturesque and agriculturally productive regions. Nestled between towering mountains, the valley is known for its stunning landscapes, particularly during autumn when the vineyards transform into a sea of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The valley stretches in a southwest to northeast direction, spanning approximately 26 km in length and remaining relatively narrow, with its widest point measuring only 4 km. It is flanked by the towering Hex River Mountains to the north and the Kwadouw Mountain Range to the south, creating a backdrop of breathtaking, rugged scenery. The highest peak in the Hex River Mountain Range is Matroosberg and at 2230 metres it is one of the highest peaks in the Western Cape. The town of De Doorns is located centrally within the Hex River valley.
The Hex River Valley is famous for its grape farming and is one of the country’s largest producers of table grapes, which are exported worldwide. The warm summers and cool winters create ideal conditions for grape cultivation. Besides agriculture, the valley is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and even snow during the winter months. Visitors can explore the region’s rich history, visit wine farms, or take scenic drives through the valley to admire its breathtaking views.
The Hex River Valley has a rich folklore, with the most famous tale being that of the Ghost of the Hex River Mountains, a tragic love story that has become a local legend. The valley's combination of natural beauty, agricultural significance, and cultural history makes it a unique and beloved destination in the Western Cape.
