The Haut Espoir (literally translated as High Hope) Winery is situated in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape. This boutique wine farm is completely family operated, with mother, father, children and extended family all having a hand in the day to day running of the farm. The Haut Espoir at Haut Espoir is to make the absolute best wines on offer both locally and internationally and this is done by ensuring that only the best equipment, best processes, best cultivars and best staff are used and none of the above are ever rushed! Set up on the foothills of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains, above the roads, the cellar doors open up to magnificent views of the Olifant Mountain and their tasting room inside the winery makes for a unique tasting experience. Haut Espoir welcomes visitors for wine tasting and sales, Monday to Friday from 11:00 until 17:00 and by appointment only on weekends.
The estate is also as famous for its conservation efforts in the area as it is for its wines. From their Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) accreditation and efforts to restore their farm, to their Fynbos Friday posts to hopefully educate the public, their dreams are for sustainable farming and development not only on their farm, but the entire wine industry.
A walk on the mountainside at Haut Espoir reveals so many examples of interesting plants, including different types of protea. Rob Armstrong (managing director) estimates that of the approximately 5000 fynbos species indigenous to South Africa, at least 500 now grow on the farm. Rob is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about fynbos and will give you a great introduction to what this unique ecosystem is all about; including the numerous dietary and medicinal uses of the plants. It is exercise clambering up and down the mountainside but the walk offers breathtaking views of the Franschhoek Valley.
