Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve - Overberg, Western Cape

The Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is a protected area situated in the Hottentots Holland Mountains, which stretch across the border of the Western Cape's Overberg region and into the Cape Winelands.  Located near the towns of Grabouw, Elgin, and Somerset West, this vast reserve covers about 70,000 hectares and offers rugged mountain terrain, lush fynbos, and spectacular scenery.

The reserve is famous for its adventure activities, particularly the Cape Canopy Tour, a thrilling zipline experience through the mountains. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails of varying difficulty, including multi-day treks such as the Boland Trail. The reserve is home to a wide range of biodiversity, including rare and endemic plant species, and various wildlife such as leopards, antelope, and an abundance of birdlife.

The Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is known for its pristine fynbos vegetation, particularly after the rainy season. The Palmiet River, which runs through the reserve, provides beautiful views and is popular for canoeing and river rafting.

The Palmiet Trail is a 6 km (2 hours) circular route is a very easy walk and suitable for young children and the elderly.

The 22 km Groenlandberg Trail is a fairly challenging trail that should takes approximately 7 hours.

The Boland Hiking Trail has two overnight huts within the reserves boundaries - the Landdroskop hut and the Boesmanskloof hut. Huts are provided with bunks, mattresses and water. Several overnight hiking routes can be undertaken that vary in length from two to three days.

The Hottentots Holland MTB trail is an easy circular route that meanders through the plantations and fynbos surrounding the parking lot by the park's office. This trail is fairly flat and suitable for all cyclists.
