The Wits Planetarium (formally Johannesburg Planetarium), located at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) in Braamfontein, is one of South Africa's oldest and most iconic educational institutions dedicated to astronomy and space science. Opened in 1960, it was the first full-sized planetarium in Africa and has since played a vital role in promoting the public understanding of astronomy and the universe.
The idea for the planetarium came about in the 1950s when a Zeiss projector became available after being displayed at the 1957 Frankfurt Trade Fair. Recognizing its educational potential, a fundraising effort was led by Dr. Harry Oppenheimer, the Chamber of Mines, and the Johannesburg City Council. The campaign raised the necessary funds, and the projector was brought to Johannesburg. The planetarium was officially opened in October 1960, and for over six decades, it has been an important hub for astronomy education in South Africa.
The Zeiss Mark IV Projector, which was installed at the time of the planetarium's opening, remained in use for many years, providing stunning, accurate representations of the night sky. Although technology has evolved, the Wits Planetarium continues to use modern systems to offer immersive star-gazing and space exploration experiences.
The Johannesburg Planetarium offers a wide range of educational programs for school groups, families, and the general public. The shows cover various topics, from the basics of astronomy and star-gazing to more advanced subjects such as the lifecycle of stars, planets, and galaxies. The planetarium’s programs are tailored to different age groups, making it a popular destination for educational trips.
Popular shows include:
- Star-gazing programs: Where participants can learn about constellations, planets, and the night sky.
- Seasonal shows: The planetarium hosts themed shows, such as viewing special celestial events or exploring particular planets in our solar system.
- Children’s programs: Fun and interactive shows designed for younger audiences that introduce them to the wonders of space.
The planetarium also plays a significant role in fostering an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among South African youth. Workshops, lectures, and community outreach events are regularly held to encourage interest in astronomy and science education.
At the Wits planetarium, visitors are treated to a breathtaking simulation of the night sky, projected onto the domed ceiling of the theatre. The state-of-the-art projection system creates an immersive experience, making you feel as if you're gazing up at the stars in a perfectly clear night sky. In addition to star shows, the planetarium hosts special events such as meteor showers, lunar eclipses, and other astronomical phenomena.
