The Market Theatre, also known as the John Kani Theatre, was originally a fresh produce market, dating back to the early 1900s. Much of the original architecture and signage from that era remain intact, preserving its historical charm. The expansive complex is home not only to the Market Theatre stages but also to several art galleries and restaurants.

The theatre features three performance spaces: the Main Theatre, the Laager Theatre, and the Barney Simon Theatre. It hosts a wide range of productions, including drama, comedy, musicals, community projects, South African works, and experimental theatre.
