Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, located in Soweto, Johannesburg, is one of the largest hospitals in the world and has a rich history dating back to World War II. The hospital's origins can be traced to 1941 when the British government established a military hospital near Johannesburg to care for soldiers during the war. The hospital was built on a farm owned by John Albert Baragwanath, an enterprising Englishman who operated a hostel and refreshment post for travelers and soldiers. The land was strategically chosen due to its proximity to Johannesburg and its spacious surroundings, making it ideal for a large medical facility.
After the war ended in 1945, the British government handed over the hospital to the South African government, which decided to repurpose it as a civilian hospital. It was renamed Baragwanath Hospital, in honor of John Albert Baragwanath, who had contributed significantly to its establishment. The hospital quickly became a critical healthcare facility, particularly for the Black population in the region, who had limited access to medical services under the apartheid regime. Over the decades, the hospital expanded its services and facilities, evolving into a major teaching and referral hospital associated with the University of the Witwatersrand.
In 1997, the hospital was renamed Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in memory of the anti-apartheid activist and leader of the South African Communist Party, Chris Hani, who was assassinated in 1993. Today, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is renowned for its extensive range of medical services, including specialized care in areas such as trauma, pediatrics, and infectious diseases. It also serves as a crucial training ground for medical professionals, contributing to the healthcare system in South Africa and beyond.
