Peace Monument - Vereeniging, Gauteng

The Peace Monument, located in Vereeniging, Gauteng, commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). This significant historical event took place on May 31, 1902, marking the end of hostilities between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State.

The monument symbolises the peace agreement that brought an end to a devastating conflict and paved the way for the eventual establishment of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The treaty outlined conditions such as the surrender of Boer independence in exchange for British compensation and the promise of self-governance in the future.

Set in a tranquil location, the Peace Monument serves as a place of remembrance and reflection on the cost of war and the efforts toward reconciliation. Visitors can appreciate its historical significance while exploring the surrounding area of Vereeniging, a town named after "unity" in Afrikaans.
