To get to Elandskraal in the Midlands & Battlefields of Kwazulu Natal, you have to turn off the tar road and travel on a loose gravel dirt road to Elandskraal, a tiny town with a very small population.
In the 1920's the Elandskraal Lutheran church in rural KwaZulu-Natal was organising a bazaar to pay for the building of their new church. They managed to do this and more, sending surplus funds to Germany to look after children orphaned by the Great War. Ninety-odd years later the Midlands & Battlefields, Elandskraal’s Lutheran church bazaar continues to prosper and raise money for good causes. The winter bazaar is a very 'German' event, where you can buy local meat - butterkuchen & mettwurst, genuine German breads, gherkins, biscuits and all the other goodies that add inches to your waist. It's such a renowned festive occasion that families drive to Elandskraal from far and wide to take part in the Elandskraal Winter Bazaar. There are fun stalls for the kids, clay pidgeon shooting, and a beer tent where the party goes on late into the night, with people swigging beers to German folk songs.
Another local Elandskraal landmark is Heinz and Monica Dedekind's general trading store, situated about 15km from Rorke's Drift in the Battlefields. This old fashioned general grocery / filling station / traditional crafts / post office is a fifth generation family business.
