Herold

Herold is a quaint little hamlet situated in the Montagu Pass. The pass is located between George, 35 km's to the south and Oudtshoorn, 38 km's to the north, on the R62. The pass was completed in 1847 by the Australian engineer, Henry Fancourt White. It was the first time that gunpowder and fire was used to create a pass through the bedrock.

Unfortunately some of the local trees in the Herold area were replaced by exotics like acacia and pine, but some of the stinkwood trees can still be seen at the appropriately named Stinkhoutdraai with its five-span bridge.

At the Tollhouse is a rest area where you can see some ferns and cascading waterfalls. Also visible in the pass is the remains of an old blacksmith's shop.

At Herold accommodation is available in the form of a guest farm. You may choose to sleep in one of five buildings dating back to the 1860's. Onsite braai/barbeque facilities, hiking trails, an outdoor pool and a restaurant is available. All of the buildings have fully equipped kitchens.

Pets are allowed at Herold and there are washing machines onsite. The beach and steam locomotive trips are 30 mins away. Guided hikes up the Cradock and George peaks are also available.
