Kleinmond

The little town of Kleinmond is 100 km drive outside of Cape town, on the scenic Clarence Drive (Route 44) and is famous for its diverse coastal and mountain fynbos. It lies on a lagoon at the small mouth of the Botriver, from which it gets its name - kleinmond - and forms part of the Kogelberg biosphere. This biosphere supports over 1600 species of fynbos. Kleinmond is also the commercial centre for this region.

Kleinmond is uniquely surrounded by nature reserves - the Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain reserve, the Rooisands Nature reserve, and the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. As such, Kleinmond has been declared a World Heritage Site and supports every type of natural habitat found in the Western Cape.

Lagoons in the area provide safe swimming, and visitors have access to walking and hiking trails, bird watching, rocky tidal pools, and the opportunity of spotting Southern Right whales in season. The marshlands around Kleinmond support a herd of wild horses as well as the endangered Cape Plantanna and rare Strawberry Frog.

Kleinmond, a charming coastal town in the Western Cape, offers a variety of attractions that highlight its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere.

Here are five must-see things in and around Kleinmond:

  1. Kleinmond Beach and Lagoon: Known for its beautiful sandy beach and tranquil lagoon, this area is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and family picnics. The lagoon is ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, providing a safe environment for water activities.

  2. Harold Porter National Botanical Garden: Located nearby in Betty's Bay, this botanical garden showcases the diverse flora of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The garden features well-maintained trails, waterfalls, and scenic picnic spots. It's a great place for leisurely walks and bird watching.

  3. Kogelberg Nature Reserve: Often referred to as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, this nature reserve offers stunning hiking trails through unspoiled fynbos vegetation. The Palmiet River Trail is particularly popular, offering beautiful views and opportunities for swimming in natural pools.

  4. Stony Point Penguin Colony: Also in Betty's Bay, this penguin colony is home to one of the largest populations of African penguins. A well-maintained boardwalk allows visitors to observe these fascinating birds up close in their natural habitat without disturbing them.

  5. Kleinmond Harbour and Art Route: The vibrant harbour area is dotted with quaint shops, art galleries, and restaurants. It’s a great place to explore local crafts, enjoy fresh seafood, and soak in the coastal ambiance. The Kleinmond Art Route highlights local artists and their works, making it a delightful cultural experience.

These attractions make Kleinmond a delightful destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those looking to enjoy the serene coastal environment of the Western Cape.
