Komatipoort is known locally as the village where people and nature live together in perfect harmony. A short drive from Komatipoort accommodation lodges lies the site of the airplane crash where Mozambique's President Samora Machel died. This Komatipoort site is now a National Monument.
History
Komatipoort was first established in 1890 by a Dutch railroad company which constructed the railway from the Mozambique border to Pretoria. Komatipoort takes its name from "the meeting of the Komati", or the place where the Crocodile and Komati Rivers meet before flowing away into Mozambique behind the Lebombo Mountains. Malaria was a major problem in those days, as it is today in the Lowveld, and caused the death of many railroad workers. Komatipoort is now the main rail and road link between South Africa, and both Swaziland and Mozambique.
