Muizenberg

Muizenberg, on the False Bay coast, is a beachside suburb of Cape Town considered the birthplace of surfing in South Africa. The colourful little changing rooms have become synonymous with Muizenberg and grace virtually every postcard on the suburb. Its beaches stretch over 20 km round the top of False Bay to the Strand and above Muizenberg is a line of steep cliffs, popular amongst hikers and rock climbers. A coastal walk stretches from Muizenberg through to Kalk Bay and provides some wonderful views and fresh sea air.

Cecil John Rhodes had his summer house here and you can visit the preserved house where he died in 1902. Het Posthuys, dating to 1742, is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa and built by the Dutch East India Company as a toll house. The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg is home to a variety of local amateur and professional talent, there are some wonderfully unique restaurants and cafés and the nearby Zandvlei bird sanctuary is worth a visit.
