Despite being rated as having the 4th best weather of any coastal city in the world, endless golden beaches offering a huge variety of water sports, an aquarium, museums, casino, nature reserves, lion park and a variety of historical and cultural attractions, Port Elizabeth remains one of South Africa's best kept secrets.
In the middle of it all lies the stylish, much sought after Eastern Cape, PE suburb of Summerstrand. Close to the beach, Summerstrand is just 5 minutes from Pollock Beach, known as 'The Pipe' to the locals, because of its excellent waves and fabulous surfing. Also within easy walking distance from Summerstrand is the popular PE Boardwalk Casino Entertainment and Restaurant Complex, which is built on a series of man-made lakes and beautiful gardens lit at night with thousands of Tivoli lights. This famous Eastern Cape, Summerstrand attraction guarantees to keep the family busy and entertained with a veritable feast of fun! Shopaholics will love this unique Port Elizabeth retail experience; the hungry can enjoy take-aways, food stalls and gourmet restaurants; kids will love the game arcades, and PE visitors can try their luck in the casino, which boasts an impressive 24 tables and 900 slot machines.
Besides the impressive PE Blue Flag beaches close to Summerstrand, which offer visitors a superb variety of activities including exceptional windsurfing, fishing, sailing and scuba diving, PE is also well known to golf lovers, who can chose between 3 outstanding 18 hole Port Elizabeth golf courses.
- Humewood Golf Club (3.9km, 8 minutes from Summerstrand) with its wide and undulating fairways, fast greens and thick coastal bush is a tough PE links golf course which is a must for any golfer visiting the friendly Eastern Cape city of Port Elizabeth.
- Port Elizabeth Golf Club, (9km, 14 minutes north of Summerstrand), is commonly known as “The Hill”, and is one of South Africa’s oldest clubs, with emphasis placed on good food and entertainment, and of course golf!
- Walmer Country Club (10km, 16 minutes from Summerstrand) is the Port Elizabeth golf course which is a genuine challenge to the amateur golfer. Accommodation review for Pine Lodge Holiday Resort in Summerstrand
While my husband was doing business in the Port Elizabeth CBD, the kids and I stayed at the Pine Lodge Holiday Resort in Summerstrand, Eastern Cape.
We stayed in one of the 3 star chalets, with the Cape Recife Nature Reserve on one side, and the Port Elizabeth beachfront on the other. Ideally the on-site restaurant was open until late, with a wide variety of treats on offer. The kids also enjoyed hours of entertainment in the well equipped games-room, on those Eastern Cape bad weather days
Although there's a wide variety of Port Elizabeth self catering accommodation around, we chose well with the Summerstrand Pine Lodge Resort
