1000 Hills Area

The Valley of a Thousand Hills is truly one of Kwa Zulu Natal's most valued gems. The Valley of a 1000 Hills forms around the majestic valley created by the Mngeni River and it's tributaries. As one makes their way along the various routes through the valley, they will pass a wide and interesting variety of craft sites, cultural villages and guest houses, friendly pubs and tea gardens with sweeping views overlooking the hills and dams.

Due to the multitude of attractions on offer in the area, the Valley of a Thousand Hills Tourism Route was proclaimed. The route which starts in the small wooded town of Kloof and ends at Cato Ridge, is easily accessible from the main highways in either direction. The main section of the 1000 hills tourism route follows the route of the famous Comrades Marathon through Hillcrest and onwards past the midway point at Drummond towards Inchanga and Cato Ridge.

Other branches of the 1000 Hills Experience take the visitor to the scenic resorts and nature reserves at Shongweni, Nagle and Inanda Dams, where watersports, fishing, hiking and game viewing are popular.

On alternate weekends, the Thousand Hills Choo Choo steam train follows the follows the scenic route between Kloof Staion and Cato Ridge allowing passengers to experience authentic steam locomotive travel as it was in years gone by. Some of the old railway stations, Botha's Hill for example have been converted into restaurants providing visitors with a delicious meal as they pull in for a stop, or for hungry travellers as they they make their way along the route.

Adventure travellers will find a host of activities available in the valley ranging from microlighting to 4x4 trails. The Phezulu Cultural village provides visitors a glimpse into the everyday inner workings of a traditional Zulu village, with beadwork displays and traditional tribal dancing.

Assagay Safari Park has a crocodile farm where you will see one of the largest crocodiles in KZN, and a full range of snakes which are indigenous to the area.

Golf courses in the area include the Kloof Country club and Cotswold Downs Country Club in Hillcrest, both with magnificent 18 hole signature courses.

The 1000 hills area is also full of an exciting range of restaurants starting with the usual well known fast food outlets, and changing in variety to cater for the more sophisticated dining experience with upmarket Italian-style restaurants such as the popular La Strada. Or taking in an entertaining show and a meal at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest.

The Valley of a Thousand Hills is well worth a visit as it provides such a huge variety to visitors whether they be seeking adventure, shopping, expanding their knowledge of a different culture, or just taking in the scenery.
