Drakenstein Lion Park - nr Klapmuts, Paarl

The Drakenstein Lion Park, located near Klapmuts in the Western Cape, is a sanctuary dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of lions that have been born or raised in captivity and cannot be released into the wild. Established in 1998, the park provides a safe, spacious environment where these lions can live out their lives in dignity. Unlike a zoo, the park does not breed or trade lions, focusing instead on providing lifetime care for animals that come from circuses, zoos, and private collections, often from abusive or neglectful environments.

Covering over 50 hectares, the Drakenstein Lion Park is home to more than 30 lions, including the famous "white lions." Visitors to the park can view these majestic creatures up close, observing their natural behaviors in spacious enclosures. The park also houses other rescued animals, including tigers. Educational tours provide insight into the challenges faced by captive lions and the importance of wildlife conservation. The park is committed to raising awareness about the plight of lions in captivity and promoting animal welfare.

The park also includes the Chimp Haven, a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, offering them a peaceful and enriched environment. With a focus on conservation, animal welfare, and education, Drakenstein Lion Park plays a critical role in wildlife preservation.
