Annandale Wine Estate - Stellenbosch, Western Cape
Annandale Wine Estate is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains in Stellenbosch with views of Table Mountain, Lions Peak and False Bay. Its beauty is only over shadowed by its heritage which dates back to the early 1700s. The manor house which was built in the middle of the 1700s and a wine cellar that predates that have both survived to this day, and can be found on Annandale Wine Estate. The 75 hectare estate was purchased in September 1996 by Gerhard (Hempies) du Toit, a former Springbok Rugby Player. Hempies classifies himself as a South African Huguenot winemaker who traces his winemaking heritage back to the founding of South Africa. Hempies grew up on Alto Wine Estate and continued in his family tradition of viticulture and oenology.
Today, Annandale focuses exclusively on growing red grapes and producing premium quality red wines. The following varietals are presently grown at Annandale, 20 hectares of cabernet sauvignon, 12 hectares of shiraz, 10 hectares of merlot, and 3 hectares of cabernet franc. The climate at Annandale varies, in winter, temperatures range from overnight lows of 4°C to daytime highs of 15°C. In summer, temperatures range from overnight lows of 19°C to daytime highs of 36°C. The average annual rainfall is approximatly 75 cm per year, which generally produces enough water for the vines to grow without needing additional irrigation.
Hempies says that he sticks to using proven methods of winemaking which has guaranteed quality for hundreds of years, with as little interference as possible in the fermentation and maturation process.
